Constantly Changing Marketing

As a marketing major, today I began exploring the American Marketing Associations trade publications. One release titled “The 4 Marketing Tactics to Stop Using in 2019” particularly caught my interest as the four methods are still very prominent in Marketing today. However, the author of the article is Pam Neely, a 20-year veteran of digital marketing so I accepted that her ideas may carry some substance.

The first idea is the one if found most outlandish as a good majority of people, although older still use Facebook. She claims that Facebook Marketing which once was a staple of the advertising industry is now dwindling down to almost completely infective. Mainly it is believed this is due to the older population that still uses Facebook versus platforms like Instagram and Snapchat. The problem lies in many companies run Facebook ads for products that target a millennial market when the target market does not use the platform. It is expected that as a result Facebook Advertising will change drastically over the next year and may almost completely be phased out of Marketing Plans.

The elimination of “Cold Outreach Marketing” although does not surprise me at all. This type of marketing today focuses on sending emails directly from the Marketing Department of a company to a list of thousands or millions of consumers. This method based off my personal experience was always ineffective to begin. It is not possible to force people to be interested in a product by sending them an email with a discount. If they do not want the product they will not buy.

Another diminishing tactic that is on the way out is Blogging. Years ago, blogging was a great way to reach out to consumers and talk about products or innovation in an industry. However, with social media site such as Facebook and Instagram becoming popular the popularity of blogs subsided. I personally feel as if blogs are already phased out and companies that still use them need to really revamp their Marketing Strategy.

The last idea expands off Facebook going broader with the elimination of Social Media Marketing altogether. In general, all Social Media site are on a downward slope, meaning less and less users are using them daily. As a result, all advertising on them does not generate as many sales as it used to. The theory is that most companies will stop investing into Social Media Marketing at least until the next big platform makes its debut.

In general, the Marketing Field is always drastically changing. Marketers need to keep up with the times and technology, especially in the physical sense. In this changing world, if you are an innovative person it is a great and profitable time to be a Marketing Specialist.
