The informational interview experience is something which is very helpful for anybody that wants to know more about the career they are entering. Participants basically interview a connection they have made in the industry they are entering with questions about how to get in, how to better prepare, and so on. This is very helpful for people that aren’t sure if they will like the field they are entering and just as useful for those that know what they want to do. Even for those set on a field or job, this might be the wake-up call needed for them to realize it’s not what they want to do.
During the interview, which can be done over phone, facetime, or in person you are the interviewer and the current person in the field is answering your questions. This is your time to ask anything you want that is helpful from “What is the wardrobe requirements for your job?” to “What is the most stressful part of your job?” to “Would you recommend working for the company you work for?” All of these questions will give you insight into the companies and fields you will be working with in the coming years post-graduation. Take advantage of your time speaking to someone in the field your entering and ask all of the questions you can think of.
At the end of the day when the interviewer is finished asking questions, they will have a general better understanding of their field. Once you have this knowledge you will know whether or not your field is the right one. In my case, following the interview I became even more set on entering the field I am studying for in the company I wanted to. At the end of the day sometimes it is better to ask the tough questions early to ensure you don’t make a mistake at the very start of your professional career.
